At The UP Creative Community, we’re more than just a collective of local artists—we’re pioneers in sustainable textile waste management right here in Tamworth. Our mission is to do things differently, empowering our community to reject fast fashion and break free from the cycle of excessive consumption. We’re all about taking what’s old and unwanted and turning it into something magical that’s ready for its forever home.
Making Magic from the Unwanted
We collect unwanted fabrics, breathing new life into them with a creative touch. Our work is all about transforming these discarded items into beautiful, functional pieces that tell a new story. It’s about more than just recycling—it’s about making mindful choices and creating something special from what others might throw away.
UPSkill Programmes: Sharing Skills, Sparking Creativity
Our UPSkill programmes are at the heart of what we do. We’re dedicated to sharing skills within the community, offering workshops that teach everything from basic sewing and pattern cutting to hand-stitching for repair and cathartic art. We provide a safe, nurturing space where creativity can bloom, helping you upcycle garments into unique pieces that reflect your personal style.
Collaborating for Change
We believe in the power of collaboration. From providing resources for charities to creating costumes for local opera productions, we work hand-in-hand with schools, organisations, and individuals across the region. Our projects encourage body positivity by showing how to tailor clothing to fit individual bodies. Whether it’s intergenerational making or large-scale community initiatives, we’re at the forefront of change, proving that sustainable living is as simple as slowing down and making thoughtful choices.
Consultancy: Rethinking Consumption Together
Our commitment to sustainability extends beyond our community. We offer consultancy services to businesses, educational institutions, and the third sector, focusing on cultural change. We help organisations rethink their consumption habits, saving money and making better use of the resources we already have within our communities. Helen Waite – Director
Helen is a force of nature, with a knack for making something out of nothing. A single mum with a rich academic background, Helen has transformed from a retail sales manager to a scholar with a Bachelor of Arts and is currently pursuing an MRes at the University of Leicester. Her work spans everything from fun, accessible creative workshops to tackling tough topics like colonisation through art and discussions. With a passion for nature and sustainability, Helen is a driving force behind our mission.
Meet Jean: The Heart and Soul of Our Hub
When you step into the Up Creative Hub, it’s Jean’s warm smile that welcomes you. A dedicated volunteer, Jean is at the very core of what we stand for—making art accessible to everyone. She’s the friendly face you’ll find running our retail space, ensuring every visitor feels instantly at home. With a keen eye for detail, she expertly manages the shop floor, carefully sorts through donations, and transforms preloved items into unique treasures for our community. And all of this while helping to raise essential funds for our initiatives.
Jean is more than just a volunteer; she’s the embodiment of care and approachability. Her exceptional customer service skills create an inviting atmosphere that encourages everyone to connect with the creative spirit of our hub. Whether you’re here to shop, donate, or simply have a chat, Jean’s friendly nature makes every visit a pleasure.
But Jean doesn’t stop there. Her passion for our cause shines through her constant flow of innovative fundraising ideas. From organising exciting tombolas and raffles to even taking on a charity head shave, Jean’s creativity and commitment to our principles of supporting people and caring for the planet know no bounds.

Meet Lorraine Holly: A Force for Inclusivity at the Up Creative Hub
Lorraine Holly is a cornerstone of the Up Creative Hub CIC, bringing her dedication and passion to every aspect of our community. Joining us as one of the first Parent Ambassadors with Compass Support in Sutton Coldfield through the Early Help programme in 2021, Lorraine has infused her unique perspective and wealth of experience into everything she does.
Her passion for community engagement is evident in her involvement in major events like the Birmingham Commonwealth Games and Birmingham Pride in 2022. These experiences have been instrumental in helping us create a welcoming and supportive environment at our new arts base in Tamworth.
With Level 3 Mentorship training under her belt, Lorraine offers professional, accessible, and trauma-informed guidance, combining accredited practice with her own rich life experiences. As a proud mother of children with special educational needs (SEN), she has successfully navigated various support systems, gaining invaluable insights that now benefit not just her family but also the new beneficiaries at the LAB.
Lorraine’s commitment to empowering others, advocating for inclusivity, and sharing her knowledge has a profound impact on our community. Her unwavering spirit and dedication to making a difference continue to inspire everyone she meets.
Meet Paul: Our Master Craftsman and Community Volunteer
Paul is our talented retired cabinet maker and a dedicated volunteer at the Up Creative Hub. With decades of experience, Paul’s passion for woodworking shines through in every piece he creates. Specialising in intricate military carvings, his work reflects both his artistry and meticulous attention to detail. You’ll find his stunning creations in our retail space, where Paul generously donates a portion of every commission and sale to support our community initiatives, ensuring his craft has a positive impact on those around him.
But Paul’s contribution doesn’t stop there. Every week, he shares his wealth of knowledge and experience with individuals of all abilities, creating a welcoming and supportive environment. To Paul, woodworking is more than just a craft; it’s a powerful form of expression that fosters creativity and confidence. By offering access to wood-based arts, Paul provides a safe space where participants can develop their skills, share their experiences, and connect with others.
We’re thrilled to be working with Paul on the development of a new intergenerational woodworking programme. This initiative aims to bridge the gap between generations, facilitating skill-sharing and mentorship opportunities that enrich the lives of both young people and seniors in our community. Through Paul’s guidance and expertise, we hope to inspire a new generation of woodworkers while celebrating the craftsmanship and stories of those who have come before.
Meet Dibby: Our Passionate Fashion Volunteer
Dibby is a dedicated and hardworking volunteer whose impact on our community is truly remarkable. Armed with a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Fashion Design from Staffordshire College’s Lichfield campus, Dibby seamlessly blends her passion for fashion with a strong commitment to helping others.
At the Up Creative Hub, Dibby has taken the lead in organising and facilitating a variety of workshops that cater to individuals of all ages and abilities. Her sewing sessions are designed to be inclusive, offering everyone the chance to tap into their creativity and develop practical skills in a nurturing environment. Dibby’s workshops do more than teach sewing; they empower participants, boosting their confidence and encouraging self-expression.
Dibby’s dedication to her volunteer work embodies the spirit of community engagement and underscores the vital role of the arts in personal growth. Her influence is felt throughout the community, as she continues to inspire others with her creativity and unwavering commitment to shared learning experiences.

Beverley Gould – Former CEO
Bev’s legacy is one of dedication and passion. With over two decades of experience in the third sector, she has managed projects that have made a real difference, from improving support services for refugees to advocating for survivors of sexual violence. Bev’s deep commitment to the arts and the environment has been a perfect fit for The UP Creative Community, and her influence continues to shape our work today.
A Safe Space for Everyone
Safety and inclusivity are at the core of our community. We’re committed to ensuring that The UP Creative Community is a welcoming and safe space for all. Our directors hold enhanced DBS checks and are trained in Mental Health First Aid, Safeguarding, Prevent, and Understanding Children and Young People’s Mental Health. We take these responsibilities seriously, ensuring that our environment is one where everyone can thrive creatively.
